Comment - Jane Brumley: Mrs. Parkerson's book Swan Island-Flyway Stopover gives a glimpse of life on Knotts Island in the early 1900's. I believe a copy is in the Currituck Library. I remember her mother's house (Mrs. Hettie Poyner) when she kept foster boys there.

It is the house you can see just as you turn in front of the KI Methodist Church and is currently the home of a Wildlife Refuge staff member. It is an interesting house because it is a "Sears Kit House" and has so been authenticated.

Comment - Sue Austin: She was my 1st grade teacher-- so sweet. Wore a smile always on her face. She taught me at the old Bayside School in 1948. My mom taught at the same school.

Comment - Terry Parkerson: Old Bayside School on Independence was a two story wooden building and served that area for some time. It was located on what I thought was Oliver's farm about two blocks before you get to Taylors Home Improvement center. My mother taught there and took me along because there were no baby sitters. I must have been 3 or 4. The school closed about 1942 when Bayside Elementary opened on Diamond Springs Rd. Mother taught in the Princess Anne / Va Beach school system for 30 yrs. She was Principal for 15 yrs at Bayside Elementary before she retired in 1972.
